What happened? Three things converged.

1. AI made the unaffordable, affordable

A traditional hand-painted oil portrait of a pet costs between $400 and $1,800 and takes six to twelve weeks. Pinterest spent 2025 quietly rewarding what it calls “giftable visual content” — pins that prompt a save-and-purchase cycle. Renaissance pet portraits, with their cinematic before/after contrast, sit perfectly in that pattern. A single viral pin of a dachshund painted as a Tudor lord can drive thousands of sales for months.

3. The Etsy AI disclosure policy worked in everyone's favor

The January 2026 policy requiring AI disclosure on Etsy listings seemed at first like a constraint. In practice, it functioned as a trust signal. Buyers now know exactly what they're getting — AI-generated, human-refined art — and prefer this transparency to the previous ambiguity around “digital painting” listings.
